Getting Started2130 viewsThe hardest part of getting started handfeeding is getting the babies to eat. Unfortunately we have yet to find any nipples small enough to take advantage of babies natural instinct to suck, so they have to be slowly taught to swallow milk dropped into their mouth. Some babies catch on quickly while others take a while. You have to be VERY careful while doing this as putting only a little too much formula into their mouths can result in it being inhaled.

Nessile in her splint2063 viewsNessile's mom bit her leg badly when she was about a week old. The bite both broke the leg and caused a major infection. We cleared up the infection and splinted the leg to see if we could get it to heal straight. Dr. Kara felt that with the good blood flow we had a good chance of saving the leg. Unfortunately the antibiotics unballanced her tummy more than the magick tummy goo could counter and we lost her to bloat four days after starting the meds.

Feeding Older Babies2001 viewsOnce babies have figured out how to eat, your biggest problem is managing to feed them often enough. Hedgies have tiny stomachs, but they empty quickly. Fortunately after the first couple of weeks of sleep deprivation, both the hedgies and their stomachs will usually have grown enough to give you a longer stretch between feedings.

Pottying Older Babies2385 viewsEven older babies still need pottied regularly. As we begin weaning the babies over to a dish we also begin pottying them less regularly to encourage them to begin going on their own. Babies are rarely able to go without being pottied at least a couple of times a day before four to five weeks.

Early handfeeding2083 viewsHere you can see one of the major problems with handfeeding: Even the smallest of tubes is very large compared to their mouth. We've had good luck with the disposable pipettes from science supply stores. Others have used the tapered irrigation syrenges or very small normal ones. In this picture I am encouraging the baby to open it's mouth by gently stroking under the jaw.
